ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER

Legacy Academy Elementary Families,

We've had a fantastic start to the school year, and students are already moving beyond the basics into deeper, more meaningful learning. At Legacy Academy, we believe education is a partnership between school and home-what happens in the classroom matters, but so does what happens at the kitchen table, in the car, and during those small moments in between.

I wanted to share a simple way you can support your child's learning from home. This takes a mere five minutes and works for any subject or grade. It’s a small habit that can make a big difference in learning.

It's called the "teach-back" method, and it works because explaining forces the brain to organize information in a way that simply listening or reading never does. Kids remember more when they explain their thinking out loud. The best part? You don't need to know the subject to help.

Take a moment and try this at home this upcoming week. After homework or the school day, ask your child to teach you something they learned, as if you're the student.

A few starter questions:

  • "Can you teach me how you solved that math problem?"
  • "What's one thing you learned today that you could explain to your little brother/sister?"
  • "If I got this question wrong, what would you tell me to help me understand it?"

You don't need to fact-check them or know the material. Take a moment to ask genuine follow-up questions such as "Wait, why does that work?" or "What happens if you skip that step?" the same way a curious student would.

When kids explain a concept in their own words, gaps in understanding show up immediately-both to them and to you. It also builds confidence: teaching something signals to the brain that you actually know it.

This works well in the car, at the dinner table, or during a five-minute wind-down before bed. No worksheets, no extra homework-just five minutes of conversation.

As always, thank you for partnering with us in your child's learning journey. Small moments like these at home make a real difference in the classroom.

Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!
